I seem to have picked up a fight with one of the largest multinational corporations? Yikes.

A couple of weeks ago I started receiving envelopes from Shell Energy. I thought that, since I don't have an account with them, it must be junk mail so didn't even open them. One day I did open one and found that they were charging me £7700 and pounds and pence for unpaid gas supply. I wrote them a not very polite email demanding clarification. There was no response. Then I wrote about this on Twitter and, miracle, there was a response.

Ok, the story, as it transpired: twelve years ago when I bought (half of) this flat, there was this company, First Utility, provider of gas, electricity and astronomic estimated bills. I complained a lot, lost a lot of my hair and some of my sanity in the process and in the end they said they would open a second customer account and delete the original one. It also had turned out that the gas meter number they had didn't correspond to the meter inside my flat. Ok, so I moved on and moved to the Co-Op and later to Octopus for electr. and gas. No complaints about those two.

It would seem that FU never closed the first account. They were eventually bought by Shell so rebranded as Shell Energy. And one day they seem to have found that account, according to which I have never paid gas, it would seem. Of course I have been paying (by direct debit, at that) to Octopus and hopefully can easily prove that. But you never know and it becomes a big source of stress -another one, in the middle of these already difficult and troubling times. Of course I don't believe I owe them a penny and, on the contrary, in a fair world I should get compensation from them for the levels of stress induced but, alas, it my not be a fair world. They have booked something called a BURS test for my gas meter. It should prove my point but, one more time, who knows what they might come up with. The last instalment of a saga of astronomic incompetence and rapacity by FU that I thought long dead.

Life was too quiet In these happy untroubled times, clearly, and the universe had decided I needed a little more excitement. I beg to differ.
Must be the swan song of summer in this building, summer always punctuated by burglar alarms going off in the night. There goes one off again, probably for the rest of the night. At least I don't have to get up early and have plenty to read. Ah, and ear-plugs.

The gas bill saga continues.

The company, First Utility, was supposed to have sorted out the second 'ghost' account, with different number, according to which I would never have paid electricity or gas in the time I've been here (about a year and a half by now). I'm still getting those bills.

I also received the 'normal' bill for this month. They'd installed a device that allegedly sends meter data via 3G to them. The bill, according to which I spent £80 on gas last month (during which, as an experiment, I was cooking on an electric range instead of the gas hob, there was no central heating use, etc) is an _estimate_, which is supposed not to happen. I'll happily move supplier when this is over but I suspect that wouldn't be the end of it if I did it now. This is turning into something like a Kafka story, or a zombie movie, where when you've think you've killed the monster the hand pops again out of the ground...

There was an alarm going off somewhere in the building for what felt like half the night.. urgh. Felt like I'd just gone to bed when I woke up. This may be a long day...

Yesterday was the first day for quite some time that I didn't watch or listen to the news. I suspect I didn't miss much, apart from stressing over things that are way outside of my control. Of course we have to be aware of what's going on -what you don't know can do you harm, but it is good to switch off the stream for a little bit once in a while.

Good morning..

Just spent three quarters of an hour on the phone to my gas and electricity supplier, First Utility.

Today, after a year protesting to them that I'm paying way too much for gas and there seems to be a meter swap in the building, I received two electricity and gas bills. One, where they acknowledge the mess and credit me for £400 for the overcharge. The second one (same name and address, different account number) claims I've never paid for my gas and leccy and I owe them £1304.84 and to pay them NOW.

Grr....  if you need to change your gas/electric supplier, I strongly recommend you not to consider these people!

I've been in my 'new' flat for a little over a year. This shows in several ways, apart from the scuffs on the paint in the  hallway. The cap of one of the kitchen sink faucets has fallen off. The screws that hold the shower glass are slightly loose in their sockets and the pane wobbles. And the bathroom air extractor is giving up in strange ways, starting and cutting off at random... there are all sorts of little glitches with the building's lifts, doors, the tiles in the courtyard and a section of ceiling in the second floor fell off, leading to the stairs being cordoned off for a few days with a lonely looking bucket underneath the dripping pipe plainly in sight...

I 'bought' the right to be in this place for the next 99 years. Much as I would like to exercise that right....

These guys supply me with gas and electricity. I have complained several times that I pay too much for what is a tiny flat, perhaps an eighth of the size of the previous, 4-bedroomed flat. Now I get a letter from some debt collectors threatening with disconnection and legal and reconnection fees in the thousands of pounds, etc. Right address, different customer number. Grrr. Just spent half an hour on the phone trying to sort that out.

Ok, granted that perhaps the way to get best customer service is not, when they reply with a dopey 'Huh?' to your attempt at explaining your problem, with a 'Sorry to wake you up, mate...'

Ooh, there's a shouting match upstairs, again. And stamping on the floor, and things crashing.

I missed all this fun before, when I didn't have neighbours. It is all very threatening and close when it is flatmates doing the shouty-thingsmashy, but it's the neighbours upstairs instead, so... who cares unless it sounds really threatening (it doesn't) in which case call the police and that's that.
The bad bits )

The good bits )

So the balance is very positive and, car parking solution pending, very worth the while those six months of aggro and stress to get to this point.

Oh, I like the new flat.

I'm not happy about the stupid parking situation (no car allowed, basically) but that issue aside, it is good to live in an almost civilised way. Or at least to be in my own space, small as it is 'n all but comfortable, warm and with everything working. I likes.
