Last night the air-conditioner box (one of those where you have to put an exhaust hose out the window) woke me up when it started spluttering and throwing hot air instead of cold. Well, I suppose that would be the day when it happened. I'd bought it soon after I moved into this flat, five years ago, at the hardware shop at the corner that then became a café then an Indian restaurant then another café and finally now a hairdresser's, so I suppose it paid its due, for those perhaps two weeks in the year when it's useful or necessary. But useful it was, on those admittedly very infrequent occasions in such a grey, wet, cold island as this normally is.

It wasn't that yesterday! It was difficult to work in the heat but it didn't actually feel to me as bad as on similar occasions in previous years. I don't have to go in the tube at peak hours, so at least I don't have to put myself through that, with people reporting 45º in some lines yesterday.

Come November I may miss this... no, actually, no I won't, or I won't miss the hottest days, at any rate. I like the summer, I'm a little more awake (or less dozy) than at other times, I feel that the things I do (guitar practice in particular) work more smoothly and productive. For a child of the tropics, though, it may be odd that I don't like the heat. Anything above about 25º begins to be a bit uncomfortable and above 30 or so it becomes really uncomfortable. I do whinge a lot, don't I.

Maybe it's that winter thing. Feeling like I'm in a sort of limbo, in transition between states, as if something was about to happen but not quite able to put my finger on it.

Went to Inferno at the Electric Ballroom on Friday -it was a good night all round; then to the Intrepid Fox on Saturday to meet with my friend Michela who had returned to live in Sardinia and was (is) briefly in the country; I'm not particularly enamoured of the place, a bit loud to have a conversation (although, surprisingly for a metal pub, far easier to talk and hear there than at the Dev) but we had a good time. Yesterday was spent doing lessons away, carefully trying to avoid skidding when driving through snowed and icy side streets in Highbury... and falling on my backside in the snow a couple of times.

All of this feels slightly unreal, though, as if it all was half a dream and not quite real life. I'm sure it will get better when the weather improves...

Just hearing in the news about the cabin where the Queen and Philip were going to stay somewhere in Africa, which was burgled by a band of baboons (a flock? a school? a gang?). Why did that make me smile so much.

It's raining indoors here now. It seems to be the window frame leaking. And this is a new flat...

At least I don't have anything pressing to do outside for a while today, wouldn't like to be out in that. We have had horizontal rain, horizontal hail, screaming wind and, in my flat, indoors rain. Of course it could be worse and, as someone was reminding on Twitter, we're hurtling down into space at scary speeds on top of a spinning wet rock ball and you never think about it.

The Met Office says it's 23º C here today. My car was saying 30º earlier. I think I believe my car, it's a whole lot hotter than 23º (not complaining just yet, although I'm not keen on hot weather but I do like sunny). Now, off for a long shower again....

It seems like no planes are going in or out of Gatwick... and there is likelihood of more disruption. London will probably not be as badly affected although the BBC was advising people in various parts of the country not to travel unless absolutely necessary, but if you're travelling abroad this week-end it looks like it would be a good idea to check with your airline before setting out...

The car was reading 36 degrees just now. The Met Office say 27º. I know which one I believe.

Picnic in  Boadicca's Tumulus in Hampstead Heath for a friend's birthday. Quite nice. Loved the walk, mostly because I didn't have to wake in the open under the sun for any length of time, bad child of the tropics that I am.

A couple of lessons a little later.

Nothing else worth of record here. What? I should be screaming and shouting because eleven grown men are chasing after a ball? Not here, sorry.

Pimm's is, on the other hand, one bit of British popular culture that I do like on a day like this.

Well, it's here. It's snowing here. Not quite so bad just yet. Just beautiful, until the morning when I have to drive in it.

Ho ho...

At least from the point of view of someone who comes from a part of the world where you have to go six hundred miles south-west and 2 miles up in order to see snow.

Maybe not so Christmassy for the people whose cars I saw smashed by the side of the road on Haverstock Hill, mind you...

I’ve been complaining a lot that I don’t have enough work, I need to get more, etc.

Maybe I won’t complain tomorrow, given that it means I don’t have to get up early and only have to deal with the snow in a ‘oh, pretty’, sort of fashion. At least for tomorrow. Come Tuesday, when I do have to drive to Watford quite early in the morning.. we’ll see. I’ll complain then. Maybe not tomorrow.

Home after the couple of lessons I do on Sundays.

This day seems to have shrunk enormously... not a lot happened today. May need to start looking for flatmate to replace K, not thrilled about that but has to be done.

There were four -no, five birthday celebrations yesterday, all of people I really like. What do you do. I went to [livejournal.com profile] silkyfish\s dinner at the Cape Town Fish Market, which is not a market and is not in Cape Town (well, this one isn’t; the mothership seems to indeed be in Cape). Yummy food, good company and managed to keep the bill within what I could pay, by drinking a couple of the free glasses of wine for other people who didn’t want wine.. (sometimes you do win). Then after I was going to go to another one of the birfday parties, just to say hello for the most part, but first I got soaked in Oxford St waiting for a bus then got off at the wrong stop and got completely, absolutely drenched. That’ll learn me ... normally I forgo the drink and drive myself instead, this time I felt I didn’t want to do that. Ended up at the Big Red in time to say Hapi Birfdei to [livejournal.com profile] mupstasia and [livejournal.com profile] andialan. That bit was good too, just the travelling in between was one of the most miserable (not the worst, by any stretch, just the most miserable) experiences I’ve had in recent times...

[ Edit ] I didn’t explain what the earworm in the title of this was. One of my Sunday pupils is this guy who runs a yoga centre and wants to play sort of pop settings of mantras. I have one of those damn songs on repeat loop inside my head and can’t get rid of the blasted thing...
