I seem to have survived another Valentine's Day, one with the potential to be a particularly painful one. Managed instead to have a good time with friends at a double birthday party (there are pictures) and later at the Slimelight. I've never really really had a very bad night at the Slime but this was a good candidate, although not for lack of good company, having arrived with the birthday boy and girl and their entourage that included [livejournal.com profile] londonjon and [livejournal.com profile] rougeno1 and running into [livejournal.com profile] djpsyche and a few other peeps. The one dancing room I found painfully loud (it did feel like much louder than usual, it may have been me) and didn't have ear-plugs with me so I stayed in the courtyard talking to people. Lasted about an hour and a half and left for home. Better than other possibilities for the night. Next month I'll be at Reptile. This last one.. no, I couldn't do that to myself. Funny how it works. All these things (Christmas, birthdays, etc) are arbitrary markers, this day is significative because we decide it is. And many of those days are just vehicles for the commercial juggernaut to make us buy things. And yet we need them and they often work. Except when they work in a way that makes us feel worse not better.

Sunday brought the monthly [livejournal.com profile] bibliogoth meeting, this time discussing 'Libra' by Don Delillo, a sort of history-fiction account of Lee Harvey Oswald's life leading to John F Kennedy's assassination. The person in the group that was the most familiar with the book hated it. I, the only person in the group that was alive at the time of the events, quite liked it although I did find the first few chapters difficult to get on with, particularly with the swarm of Federal agents that all 'looked' identical and in my mind were all like copies of the Matrix's Agent Smith. A very interesting discussion that centred more on the events that the book explores rather than the book itself.
Last week end was rather long. It could have started on Tuesday, Bastille Day which also happens to be my birthday. After last year's fiasco (when I found myself alone in the company of [livejournal.com profile] kruku in the middle of a sea of tables reserved for us in a pub in Holborn) I didn't feel like putting myself through a birthday celebration this year. So I didn't. I'd said to people that I'd share a birthday drink with whoever came to the garden concert I was playing on Thursday. In the event, I had less than half the numbers of people I was anticipating (and that still counting on about half the people who tell you they're going to come actually will -with a lower proportion on Facebook). The concert went well, people liked what I played and I found myself later at Aces & Eights in the good company of [livejournal.com profile] ravenstoker, [livejournal.com profile] augeas, [livejournal.com profile] kekhmet and one or two other people. A couple of pints, a pizza and some good conversation.

On Friday I went to a football pub ... no, wait, went there to see [livejournal.com profile] djpsyche's band the Memepunks doing their usual fun covers and mash-ups, with [livejournal.com profile] deathboy doing an excellent opening set (we'll have to talk about his remarkable guitar technique:) and [livejournal.com profile] aliasrob doing a short but sweet stand-up comedy set. After this I went to Aces and Eights.. again, to join the goths at the New Dusk and dance a little bit. On Saturday, finally, I had some birthday cake at Reptile, as well as perhaps one or two pints more and a little bit of dancing and talking rubbish catching up with peeps. So it would seem like I did get a little bit of birthday celebration after all.

We'll see whether next year my birthday-twin [livejournal.com profile] lovelybug and I can get it together to make a joint celebration. We'll see.

Another week-end whizzed past, this one a rather quiet one as I was trying to prepare and get ready for this little gig later this week. Apart from lessons and shopping, my only outing was to the Big Red on Saturday for [livejournal.com profile] robot_mel's birthday drinks (Happy Birthday, Mel!), which was a lovely occasion and of which there are pictures in this FB album.

In the week, I booked train tickets for the rather complicated (and expensive, but I knew that) trip to Italy with my sister later in April when she comes over from Venezuela. I'll be worrying now about the mad dash through Paris from one train station to another and whether we'll make it on time for the connecting train in the time we have. So it goes, I s'pose -I've found something to be worried about for a while, apart from my concert.

Also, although we didn't see any snow in London this year (but there's always April, when it snows here it seems to be quite late so people can go 'oooh, look, snow falling in April...'), in one of my ancestral homes, my mother's home town of La Grita in the Venezuelan Andes and just a couple of degrees above the Equator, it was snowing for the first time in recorded history two days ago...

Excellent gathering at the North Nineteen last night for [livejournal.com profile] indigo_violet's birthday and the [livejournal.com profile] londongothsluts meet. We filled the place to capacity and there were faces I hadn't seen for a long time in there -including Toby [livejournal.com profile] wintrmute all the way from Australia, [livejournal.com profile] ravenstoker and even [livejournal.com profile] lproen. Good interesting conversations with those three, including a long one on science-fiction, Charlie Stross and Neal Stephenson with [livejournal.com profile] lproven. Good food and lovely cakes by the birthday girl. A very good evening all round.
A few pictures of [livejournal.com profile] blackberryqueen 's Birthday Picnic in Hampstead Heath, in this Facebook album. It was an enjoyable  afternoon full of fun in the sun   with lovely people, many of whom I seldom see these days, which is more the shame.

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] robot_mel  and [livejournal.com profile] gabrielita_l ! Hope the day brings you all good and shiny things!:)

(That's Melanie and Maida, for those reading this in facelessbook...:)

ION, another slow moving day at school.  And also, a couple of instances of ... "your email client cannot display this message properly;  click on this link to get this spam properly.." that'll be because I set my email client  to not get external images or HTML, precisely because I don't want to read your spam properly, thanks:D

Ok, so I'm a little grumpy and need more coffee:)

In my teaching room at Watford Grammar, again. It sometimes feels like life is a hamster's wheel or a merry-go-round, you find yourself again and again facing the world from the same corner. Read through  a couple of Bach lute pieces to remind myself how I got into this and why I do it, rather than any of various other things that could bring in more money.

In the last ten minutes I've received notice of cancellation of five lessons for later this week. This is not good.. I'm still quite busy and one always allows for a certain percentage of cancellations, but all of these in one go is a bit much.

Last but not least! Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] giggly_teapot  and, slightly belatedly,  [livejournal.com profile] aka_toothbrush  and  [livejournal.com profile] dr_yen  (although I don't think either of the latter checks their LJ much these days).

It is totally much too early to be up. Again.

How about this job title? I think I could do that.

On a different note, Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] gothic_violin ! Hope you have a lovely one.

Right, I need more coffee. Good morning...

It's Friday and I didn't have to get up at 6:00 am. In fact, got up at 9:00, a much more civilised time. Practically free today, also, which is good, I have a lot of stuff to do * . Busybusy this evening, there are quite a few things happening. At the end of it all, may call at Blacklist (or is it Departure? I can never remember which one is first) and possibly even Inferno for a little while. Before that, I might even have time to sort out the pictures from the Eden House gig the other night. It would seem to me like the new lens (a Tamron 17-50) has a far less crisp focus than the old Sigma had. But then I may have been drinking that night...

And it's a Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] pitufina, [livejournal.com profile] untermensch and [livejournal.com profile] the_devilsbitch!! Hope all your birthdayses are fantastic!!

* any stuff, that is, that does not require both hands. I cut my left hand's index finger quite deeply while cutting bread last night (Cue screaming and 'there was blood eeeverywhere',etc). It doesn't make the bread more tasty either.
Good night last night, first at [livejournal.com profile] lucifiction's birthday and then at Vagabonds for [livejournal.com profile] morbidfrog and [livejournal.com profile] combat_kitten's birthday. There may be some pictures of the former, later, as well as some from [livejournal.com profile] combat_kitten's birthday dinner at Jai Krishna the night before. Then a horrid wait for night bus under the rain and a semi-horrid bus journey; horrid in spite of good company but a reminder why I so often drive to events, even at the cost of not being able to drink. The night life on board night buses is not one of the aspects of London I'm most enamoured of.

Today I only plan a short outing for provisions, one lesson later on (there should have been another one..) and continuing reading the two books I'm reading: 'Blank Slate', Steven Pinker's study and thesis on human nature, and 'So Say We All', a compilation of thoughts on the series 'Battlestar Galactica' and the ideas touched on by it.

And, last but not least, Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] lucifiction, [livejournal.com profile] morbidfrog, [livejournal.com profile] mausch, [livejournal.com profile] bloomoo, and [livejournal.com profile] squirmelia

Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] cooljohn, [livejournal.com profile] fenbane and [livejournal.com profile] digitalangel!! Hope you have a very good day!

It would also seem to be the birthday of Steve Jobs but he doesn't read my blogs these days. We don't speak much to each other.

Good coffee and breakfast, good first lesson. A reasonable start of the week, at this end.

Dead and Buried's special was a very good night. Photos will follow, when I find the time to edit and sort them out...

No sign of snow in NW5 at this point.

Ah, yes, the important things: Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] vexen!!

Good morning!
Too early to be up. 6:00 am should definitely be banned, one should only ever be coming back home from something at this time, not getting up.

Not too early, though, to say Happy Birthday to Mr [livejournal.com profile] kynon, Miss [livejournal.com profile] tar0r and Miss [livejournal.com profile] gigib!!
I missed several events happening this week-end, more notoriously on Friday when I fell asleep in the evening and woke up in the early hours. That hadn't happened for a long time.

I did attend [livejournal.com profile] erming's birthday celebration at Zeitgeist. This was excellent, with lots of convivial folk, German beer and a free German buffet that pulverised my intention of not eating much yesterday. And a paper aeroplane battle. Later that night I went to [livejournal.com profile] green_badger, [livejournal.com profile] andialan and [livejournal.com profile] mupstasia's birthday party in, what is it called now, what used to be the Archway Tavern. And, again, a very good party it was, in a very different way. The DJs did an excellent job, I caught up with people (or, in some cases, nodded and smiled while straining to make out what they were saying), danced a bit and may have been a bit thrunk towards the end, although I'm pretty sure I didn't dance on the tables or propose marriage to anybody. Came back relatively early, around 3:00 am, as I had a number of things to do today, which I somehow failed miserably at completing, apart from one lesson.

There'll be pictures of the Zeitgeist event (taken with cheap compact camera; my main lens is dedd and I'm waiting for insurance payment..) appearing at some point in the next couple of days.

ION, having breakfast at the Lit Café in Tufnell Park. Lessons later, maybe pint in the evening at the Edinboro Castle. Life.
