A friend has noticed that her PAYG Oyster card often runs down the credit she puts into it very very quickly and that reminded me that I very often have had  this happen to me -when you get through the gate the  machine charges you maximum amount for your journey; it is supposed to credit you back the difference when you check out at the destination but in my experience it very often doesn't. If you use Oyster PAYG (these days I tend to buy weekly tickets) it is a good idea to check at the ticket machines at your destination that you have not been overcharged. All too often the gate will beep and let you through but it won't have registered and you will be charged too much for your journey.

I must admit to being very confused just how much the PAYG Oyster charges for things, I have had two different rates for a journey Camden from Euston. I have noticed that the journey from Watford to Euston is cheaper than the journey from Euston to Watford - very odd

When you go through the turnstyle it charges you maximum amount for any journey, which is £4.30 these days. When you go past the turnstyle on your way out it should refund you the difference between that and the cost of your journey. It very often doesn't.

That's why I check my Oyster usage through the Website - I've found it occasionally overcharges, but usually only when something odd has happened (e.g. when I had to scan the card a couple of times to get it to read). Mind you, I probably wouldn't bother checking if I didn't have to go onto the site anyway so I can download & claim Oyster usage for work.

It was happening to me much more often than that. And I cannot claim transport usage to my boss. I'm my boss..... :0

I must remember that for the next time I am in Londinium.

Always check if you have time, or online as soon after as you can otherwise

I've recently noticed the same too - it's such a pain going to the counter every time to get refunds. :-/

There was a short piece on London Tonight yesterday acknowledging this problem and saying that probably thousands of commuters were being charged up to double daily!

Was there? I may look it up online or something. I found this out months and months ago, when I noticed my credit on PAYG Oyster cards ran out so quickly. There's supposed to be a maximum charge per day but I'm not sure that is being enforced either, from my experience.
