Tried to install Yosemite on my Mac mini last night. It froze on the progress bar on restart. There ensued three hours of trying to figure out how to get out of that, force restart, try again and finally very slowly finding a way to backpedal into Mavericks. At least I wasn't doing it in my MacBook Air which has all my work in it. That was a bit of a waste of an evening...
Initiating the move to a Mac mini -which is mostly because it would be handy to have access to more than the 6GB that my current 2008 iMac can have. The mini can have 16GB. Also even the slowest Ivy Bridge mini would be a bit faster than my early C2D iMac. Apart from that there isn't really anything wrong with the iMac -which I have to sell, of course, to help pay for the new little box. So, I might have an iMac available for sale in a couple of weeks' time.

Not trusting Apple's Migration Assistant -failed to copy across the soundfonts in /Library/sounds and ~/Library/Sounds; what else has it failed to copy that I won't have noticed? Cannot do a straight clone (or indeed use the iMac's SSD as is) as the mini wouldn't boot from it. There are other things that will take a little while to sort out. The idea is in any case to put an SSD instead of the poky HDD that comes with the mini, probably the one I already have.

Watching the Prez and the Prime Minister frying hamburgers for veteran soldiers on BBC News. I suppose this is the 21st century's equivalent of hugging babies.....

Watching that while taking apart my iMac -when I upgraded the hard disk to a 2TB one a few months ago (and a very good idea that was) I accidentally disconnected the microphone cable. Fiddly little connector which wouldn't stay attached. Doing that again today took an hour and a half of my life.  Seems to be working now, though.

Ok, maybe off to the gym, I think I have time to do this before next lesson.

What a lovely sunny day!
Just back from meeting with the u.c.s.m people at the Apple Store (yes, I did spend too much money on a mouse) and dinner at Merkato, the Ethiopian restaurant in Cally Road. The latter was excellent. Good food and good company -but ate way too much (you kind of don't notice, when you're scooping out food in little bits out of a, what to call it, communal plate) and now I don't think I can go out again (although probably should go out jogging from here to Kings' Cross and back again, given the amount of food consumed..)

Overheard as I was getting into Kings Cross station: somebody with Australian accent says to his friend "But of course! Does the Pope shit in the woods..?"

Sitting waiting for pupils to arrive, catching up with email, sending a recorded guitar part to somebody I'm playing some flute and guitar duets together with -who I have never met. Strange times.

Last night: gathering at Quinn's for [livejournal.com profile] dangermonkey's birthday, which was a good celebration. I was converted to Catholicism -er, no, only to German Catholic beer -yum.. They went on to the Slaab to carry on partying but that wasn't really an option for me. Althuogh my 10:00 am pupil still hasn't turned up at 10:32 am.... hm...

Later today: more lessons, then MacExpo and dinner with the u.c.s.m. lot after the Expo at an Ethiopian restaurant in Sheperds Bush, then probably Fright Club.

Ah, and Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] cython and [livejournal.com profile] kaerasta! The latter is having such a hard time of late, travelling all across Russia, Mongolia, China and the Far East, sending us an amazing photographic trail of her travails...
