I'm currently reading, for the next [livejournal.com profile] bibliogoth meet-up, Holly Black's "The Coldest Girl in Coldtown". What follows is a short review -or, rather, first impressions (since I've only read a third or so of it) of this book:

It's utter, utter rubbish -at least for me, to me, E&OE, &cc. I get the feeling the author can actually write but either chooses not to (maybe because teen-age vampire books will sell more), or is in the situation of an orchestral composer who ends up doing commercial jingles. Not sure whether I'll bother finishing it.

Yeah, Ruth said it was bad too. Which is a shame, because *yes* Holly Black can actually write well. I enjoy YA books, as long as they are good books, and have quite enjoyed some of her others (as well as a short story or two).

I've not read the book you guys are reading, so can't say how the writing compares, but I *think* I'm a reasonable judge of writing, so sounds like she's written a dud this time...

Well, it could be a case of YMMV and E&OE, etc, as I find the genre a little difficult to bite into (sorry...) and generally just don't like YA vampire books, so maybe it is just my own prejudice, etc.... but let's say I'm just not enjoying the book....

Her other writing that I've read was not vampires. So it could also be that she's not as at home with the vampires as she is with various incarnations of the Faerie folk.

I have to say, though I've not read The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, I did pick it up to glance at when purchasing a few books a month or so ago, and on skimming the back and the first sentences it really didn't grab me. Whereas her novel Valiant grabbed me as soon as I glanced in it.

Which I don't think is just down to me connecting more with tales of the Fae than with tales of Vampires... That is true of me, but it is also true that I quite enjoy a *good* Vampire story now and then.

I love the way you don't hold back, Flavio - "it's utter, utter rubbish" - LOL
