I am wondering about this Dreamwidth account. I hardly ever post anything here that I don't also put in my livejournal. There are only two people in my list who are not also on LJ and who don't post there as well as here. It'd be an excellent back up for LJ (and free of Russian hacker disruption) except for a couple of things... like very few of my friends are here. Livejournal is already, in these facebook times, kind of a minority interest -I never managed to persuade my family and friends across the ocean to make it there, let alone here. And, yes, they're al on FB.
Will have to think of some specific use for this DW, I s'pose -I'm not going to close it any time soon, given that, few as they are, there still are a couple of friends here who are not on LJ and I do like to know how they're doing.

Hopefully over the Christmas period I'll get to finish off the load of half written LJ posts I have and consequently get my LJ up to date and then copy the posts over here. I did try to post on DW and get it to cross post to LJ but it all went wrong - I've been meaning to give it another try (but first I need to get everything up to date).
As you can see from my reply - people do read whats posted here. The problem is a bit of a catch 22 situation - people don't post because no one is here, No one is here because no one posts. Also I've noticed that some people seem to think that getting a DW account (even just as a backup) is somehow putting nails in the coffin of LJ. Thing is alot of the folk still on LJ aren't fans of FB (we are there because there are alot of people we can't keep in on-line contact with by any other method (except possibly E-mail), also many things are only promoted on FB), and would be looking for an alternative if LJ "Falls". Diaspora squandered what momentum it had and by the sounds of it Google + is FB by another name (also there is the whole user name issue). I think alot of people will wait until theres either an announcement by LJ that they are going to fold in a few weeks or we wake up to no LJ at all (and find out by a news website that the Russian gov has closed it down) - at which point there will be panic among alot of LJers (either going to Wordpress or asking "what was that Dreamthingy / Diaspora you told me about ?". Most People won't move until something forces them to.

There's a problem with FB alternatives: everybody is in there, the momentum is very difficult to stop, reverse... it will happen at some point, that people will move to something else, but it won't, I reckon, happen by design, as Google has tried with G+. It's a shame that Google have fumbled somewhat with that, as G+ is much better designed than FB. But there's no picture or event integration (no, there isn't, whichever way you want to put it) and my sister and my friends across the ocean who aren't goths or geeks are not in there either.
As for livejournal, I do hope it survives. It's funny how this time of year brings quite a few of the old faces (in my flist) back for some recapitulation of the year post. You cannot do that in FB. You can here, but again, same problem: if LJ is a minority interest, DW is an obscure sect with dedicated but few followers...
