G+ again

Google+ does seem to be taking off very quickly. Or perhaps it's the fact that I hang out with geeks -and goth geeks at that- who may be more likely to be unhappy with the failings of Facebook (especially regarding privacy, etc) and willing to explore alternatives. In any case, in a couple of days I find that a substantial number of people I know are on G+ already, with more appearing all the time. For a clearly as yet somewhat experimental and unfinished product that is very impressive. It might not follow the fate of Googlewave after all. We'll see..

I must admit I am wary of it. I don't want another place on the internet where I can be found under my real name. And I dont know what the privacy is like there. That and I don't really have time or need to be checking another site for stuff!

Yep, that's the risk they run. The idea of making you put your friends in 'circles' which are pretty much invisible to one another might go some way to alleviate the problem of how to deal with yoru boss, your children/family etc and your partying buddies in one place. They never need to see what you publish in each segment or circle (unless something goes wrong, of course and something nearly always goes wrong). The privacy problem is probably the most serious one with Facebook -and in FB it would seem to be so by design,not accident.

The second one may seem more trivial but might be more important: You will think, "Do I need yet another internet time sink?"

I understand how circles works to posts, but how does that work for pictures? Or other things? The thing that's always been best about LJ is that you can create your own filters here. On facebook I try not to be friends with anyone whose going to be too judgemental of anything I do so not really worried about filters there. It's the people who I'm NOT friends with having access to what I write or photos and things that I'm concerned about. I mean you can't even find my profile on facebook unless we're already friends. With google I get the feeling if you create a profile it will be availble for everyone to see via google search.

Yeah, I think that's probably the biggest reason. Starting the new job is seriously going to cut into my surfing the web time and so probably not the right time for me to be joining a new social network!
