I had joined Diaspora a couple of months -a couple of you guys are already in there and I had added you in it. Now it tells me when I try to log in that no account with that email address exists, even though I can see the notifications from them sent to that email address. I imagine they delete accounts after a period of inactivity -but can't find info on that anywhere in the site. Slightly annoying although of course if they deleted it for lack of use it means.. well, that I wasn't using it. Still...

diasp.org was just one node of many. It reset all accounts shortly after it got a wave of publicity on DW.

Diaspora appears to be designed with the assumption that everyone who wants an account controls their own server to run it on. Since this is not the case, it devolves to a feudal model, where your identity on the service is as a vassal of the server operator, with no redundancy or portability. Thus it combines the worst of a single point of failure with the worst of a distributed system - quite a feat of design.
