Last night was excellent. I'm not sure I want to do that again, though (although I probably say the same thing every year) t-oo much stress  over  who's going to turn up, the restaurant giving me grief, a certain feeling of guilt  about making my friends spend money in order to share time with me on my birthday.  It all went well, though; it didn't rain, I didn't get the massive last minute all-cancellations I was kind of fearing  -or rather, I did but I did get enough numbers. Didn't get a chance to catch up properly with every one but that's just what happens in a gathering like that.

Oh, nothing major, just what they do: they wanted a deposit at first (for the first time in the seven or eight years I've been doing this), they wanted to know 'exactly' how many people I'd have, they wanted to send me to the basement because it might rain -ok, this one wasn't unreasonable given the weather yesterday but I didn't want the basement and had told them it'd only be a very last resort.

I don't know why you have your birthday there every year (BYOB, probably) -- the food is awful and the service sucks. I vote for more Flavbirthdays at a different restaurant!

Oh, I don't think the food is that bad, or I wouldn't have returned -I generally like the food, although YMMV... the service is.. variable. It's mostly about the garden, it does have a certain atmosphere that I like, particularly when it's full with us lot. It wouldn't be the same in Big Red. There are a couple of lovely places near where I now live but they're tiny and would not have enough space for us.

No, Big Red birthdays are a bit of a cliche and it is nice to go out for a meal rather than just booze it up. Maybe they do meat better. My meal had pretty much no flavour at all.

Big gatherings at restaurants can always get unnerving; I quite liked bin tang though every time I've gone for your big day. Sorry I missed the peanut sauce this time!
