I never understood what was the difference between a hobgoblin and a regular goblin.

Hobgoblins have a more dog-shaped snout and reddish-brown skin/hair.

I like them. Then again I wasted half my time at Uni in one... They have interesting beers and are more alternative friendly than other chains.

The comments summary of all the hobgoblin pubs [http://www.beerintheevening.com/chains/chain.shtml/chain/23/show_comments/5/] seems to be mainly upbeat about the other hobgoblins. Some get slated, but it looks like most get a positive review.

However it does not bode well for something I heard during the week, which I just took as rumour which is that the Dev is to be renamed to "The hobgoblin".

The bar staff already confirmed it was going to be renamed to The Hobgoblin when I was there on Thursday.

Yeah, if you've seen the one in Aylesbury, it has a sign that reads 'abandon hope all who enter here'*

But really, it is bad...

*OK so I lied :D

Fucking ace! I hadn't known Wychwood had a pub in Brighton so hadn't put two and two together. If it's really Wychwood that are in charge of it now, that boess very well indeed.

For ale-drinkers, at least.

I'm happy about this (and the Hobgoblin in New Cross is dead nice, beerintheevening reviews are far too web 2.0 to be of any use whatsoever - I don't really trust the opinion of people who rate a pub because the female punters are cute, but that's another rant for another time) ;)

I really liked the one in Bedford when I used to live there, but any pub is only as good as its punters - but if the people that go to the Dev continue to go to the Hob I can't see it changing all that much. (Barring the sad loss of Robyn and Janine)
