I actually have a lot of time for Richard Dawkins in several respects: he's a very good popular science writer, at least when he's writing about the field he knows about; I find his books inspiring to me; they do transmit to me the amazingly intricate wonder of the natural world, without having to involve a supernatural invisible friend in the sky. On the other hand, the way he forces his views on religion -which I share, btw, 100% and I do think religion is a nefarious influence, on the whole- can be quite irritating -you're right, there would appear to be something of the religious fanatic in him.
My main problem with the bus campaign is that it looks silly and twee. I cannot see how it could be otherwise without offending people but then, why do it in the first place then.
Given the state of the world, I think I rather believe in the existence of a blind, idiot god in the bowels of the universe, that mean and stupid god of Lovecraft's, Azazoth...
