Reach does seem to be the big issue - it was one of the reasons why Zuckerberg tried to turn FB into a sort of walled internet, which all of your friends and family were on. Email? Don't need it, they've got messenger. Events? This can handle that, too. Advertising? Yeah, we're harvesting everything you say and do to build a profile, don't worry about it. There are advantages to a one-stop shop, especially when 95% of people are inside it, but it does have a number of flaws.
