Into the London Fog: Eerie Tales from the Weird City by Elizabeth Dearnley




A collection of short stories based around the theme of the London pea-super fog. I found it rather uneven and perhaps oddly I found the couple of essays (one by Virginia Woolf, one by Claude McKay, fair more interesting than the stories, which I would have loved when I was 14 but at this point I found rather predictable and so-so; not terrible but not that very exciting. Still, enough of the book is a good read that it is work the while. And of course you might have different tastes and not agree with me.

Ay... so much time sice I read for pleasure... I'm reading a lot of artistic research texts, beautiful, interesting, inspiring texts, but always "for something".

Ah... at times I have to make myself read! Not a big chore as I'm a compulsive reader anyway, but other things often get in the way. I attend a book club once a month, bilbliogoth, currently run by silkyraven, which my goth friends set up over twenty years ago (haven't been going that long, perhaps eight or nine years). So we have a deadline, you have to read the set book by the date of the next meeting. And it makes me read stuff that I probably wouldn't go out of my way to read, like this book -left to my own devices I'd probably just read science-fiction non-stop. This way I've discovered a lot of interesting writers, particularly women writers like Chimamanda NgoziAdichie and Zara Neale Hourston. It's been very nourishing for me. I hope you can do something similar at some point.
