Interregnum, again… the no-man’s land between Christmas and New Year, a stop in the wilderness between stations. On a train, now, towards Greenwich –perhaps appropriate, to the place where someone decided the hemispheres of the planet split. Something ends, something begins, nothing changes that much.

Is something really ending, something really beginning? Maybe, to an extent at least. We make up these things and we make up their importance but perhaps if it is important for us it is, after all, important.

We make it up, decide that a particular point in the turning of the planet around the sun is the beginning of the year. The year that ends now won’t end the griefs and the fears that came with it –but we do hope that it will be different. Maybe it will, maybe it will, we say and look up at what may come, expectantly.

It is awfully quiet today, isn't it.

I had a quiet one with Venezuelan friends in Kent; traditional Venezuelan xmas dinner late on the Eve (Venezuelan apart from the Xmas pudding, which is not really that typical, say, in Caracas) and stayed with them in the day yesterday. Forgot to bring the part of the enormous roasted leg of pork that was offered me and the rest of the Pandoro, between which I could have fed myself for the next couple of months. There was a certain amount of alcohol involved, as although my friend doesn't drink at all, that doesn't apply to the rest of the family.

Today is the Great Boredom Day, I suppose. And the sales, but I don't think I will be rushing to buy anything in a madly crowded shop in Oxford St and without tube trains to bring me back. I think I'll stay here and probably finish 'Dance with Dragons' today. Maybe pub tonight if there is a reasonable one open near and peeps that I can meet there.
Merry Crimbo to you! Hope you all had a good one.

First of all, Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] glitchdrei, [livejournal.com profile] digitaljunky and [livejournal.com profile] squiddity (for yesterday) and [livejournal.com profile] kitch_kash for today!

And Merry Crimbo (or feast of your preference) -hope you all have a very good time!

There's pictures of the Bleak Xmas at the Roch somewhere on Facebook. There'll also be along later a couple of bits of film footage of peeps singing (I think you call it) Carols there on Monday.

Christmas was good, after all. First xmas I spend in the UK for, I don't know, perhaps ten years. I thought I'd end up propping the bar at the Dev, the only customer on xmas eve, mumbling into my drink, cue trembling violins, etc. Instead had a lovely Nochebuena dinner with Heidi and the day after saw the fabulous xmas dinner at [livejournal.com profile] redlaurie and [livejournal.com profile] mark13. And yes, Laurie is a chef, I can bear witness to this. Food was fantastic. I'm intrigued that she can cook meat so well when she's herself a veggie. Very good company. There are some pictures here.

Boxing Day was very quiet. In the evening I met with [livejournal.com profile] rricardouk for a drink in Quinn's; briefly saw [livejournal.com profile] indigo_violet and [livejournal.com profile] silkyraven there. Today will be spent just pottering doing things in the house.

And, Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] edwardscissors!
